Redfern Artists Group's "Home" exhibition: Artist Profiles

"Home"
4th Exhibtion by Redfern Artists Group

Artists Profiles:

Jo Tracy:
is a multi disciplinary artist based in Redfern since 1995.
Jo founded Redfern Artists Group in 2009 and has been exhibiting yearly in group and solo exhibitions since 1989. Jo's art practice produces works in many disciplines and she has been working with digital and new media since the early 90s,

Jo's work for The “Home” exhibitions explore an imagined, historical narrative based on the history of decorative objects as both objects of beauty and status symbols. It sees the return of her digital works in the form of “Space Deco” inspired digital prints and some favourite motifs, such as “Millenium Man”

Karin Hasse:
Since graduating from National Art School,
Karin has worked in film and tv art production and has always had a strong interest in experimental techniques in a variety of mediums.

She participated in the previous RAG show, “RAG REVOLT” and has known Jo since they were at the National Art School together.
“Pushing the materials outside the boundaries of their common use” Karin often  explores concepts related to the body through these mediums.

Jude Williams:
Jude creates harmonious, abstract landscapes out of ordinary household refuse such as discarded cereal boxes and clothing. Her thoughtful, transcendent works reveal the beauty in the ordinary and speak of transformation and rebirth.

Alison Burke:
Alison's distinctive paintings explore the various masks of humanity through her
figurative style. Working mainly in acrylic, her striking works reveal a vivid imagination, a passion for life and an understanding of its beauty and mystery.

Bridget Lafferty:
Bridget is long time resident of the neighbourhood and her Redfern inspired ceramic works are a continuation of themes explored in her paintings. They reflect inspirations found in her local environment as well as her interest in community and social engagement.

Gaylene Smith:
Gaylene exhibited in out first RAG show “RAGTIME” at Global gallery in Paddington in 2011.
She is a self taught, Redfern local, with special needs, who joined RAG after attending Jo's community art classes.
Her delightful works are an unfiltered response to her love for painting and her deep longing to tell her personal history.

Jill Mayne:

Jill is a Redfern based artist working mainly in acrylic. Andy Warhol, Pop, Asian and Graphic Art have been major influences on Jill's work. Her bold, graphic works for this exhibition are inspired by interpersonal relationships, domestic harmony/disharmony and the comforts/discomforts of home.

Sid Sledge:
Sid's charming and poignant works reflect on the
human condition in a whimsical,
imaginative and dream-like way.

Booyart (Alex Smith)
Shotcall Productions Film maker and Redfern artist Alex Smith, who also goes under the name Booyart, creates powerful, dense, vibrating images inspired by urban life.

Julie Doye:
Julie is a Sydney based Pop artist known for her graphic, expressive, figurative paintings.
For the “Home” exhibition she has been inspired by the folds and forms she observed in a basket of laundry. Her bold, colourful works bring a charming magic to the mundane.

(more to come)

What do you think about when you get home, when you leave home, when you're at home, or when you hear or see the word "home"?
Are you lucky enough to live in one? and do you feel safe and secure in it?
It is a comfortable space or a depressing place?
Are you as snug as a bug in a rug ? or feel as if any moment the rug will be pulled out from under you?
Is home where you feel most "yourself"? or are you still looking for "somewhere" to feel at "home"?

Homes are a relatively recent concept for a us humans who've been on walkabout for most of ur existence.
Before we settled in permanent structures, we decorated our temporary dwellings, our caves and our bodies, we made jewellry to trade and art, stories, songs, dance and language to share our individualism with others and to unify our various cultures.

RAG artists have a huge scope with this topic...anything from a cardboard box to planet earth
and layers of conceptual ideas in between. Who knows what we'll come up with?

My sources tell me that there'll be some upcycling and recycling involved in the pruduction of some artworks...stay tuned :)

Looking forward to seeing you all at the opening and around Redfern.

Home is where the art is!

 HOME

Descend from the mountain tops
And you can feel my heart
As if we were never apar
I'm home
Oh, I'm home
I'm home
Oh, I'm home

Falling
Shame
Playing
Game

I call, I call the spirit
He can't hear it
My voice
My choice

I'm home
Oh, Im' home
I'm home
Oh, I'm home

I'm breaking down words
To see the birds, oh high
And now I see
Oh yes
I now can see
Oh yes
Now I can see
The reason why
Home means so much to me
